The other day, we spoke about how you need to ‘Just Write’ if you want to be an Author.
Writing like any other skill needs practice. Let’s take an in-depth look at how you can begin to write, starting NOW! The fail proof way to do this is to set SMART goals in your journey of becoming an Author.
How do you set smart goals?
Be SPECIFIC: Choose your book idea, this is the exact subject/theme you want to write about. In been specific, it is recommended that you create a book outline as a guide before you begin to write.
MEASURE: decide on the minimum number of words/pages to write daily. Your daily count would further help you pinpoint the exact number of days to complete your book. A daily word count of 500 words means you need twenty (20) days of consistent writing for a 10,000-word book. Tuning & turning off all distractions is a great way to achieve this daily goal.
ACHIEVABLE: To make your writing goal achievable decide on the means to get your writing done. Would you dictate your book using a voice to text software like Google Keyboard, Dragon Naturally speaking? Do you plan to handwrite your book? Would you be typing it on your Smartphone, Ipad or Laptop? Find what works for you & do it.
RELEVANT: In making the content of your book relevant to your target audience, the place of research cannot be over-emphasized. Ensure you do research offline and online in the writing of your book; use surveys, Visit Google, YouTube, Wikipedia, Online & Physical Libraries, Amazon.com etc to access current research on your book idea.
TIME-BOUND: Pay keen attention & find your most productive time of the day. Would you devote an hour early hour of the day or late at night to writing? Perhaps, your lunch break at work could be devoted to this? You would also want to identify WHERE you focus best and are able to write.
Finally, do not edit while you write as this would only slow you down. Worse case scenario, it can get you stuck and unable to move forward with your book project as you keep editing & rewriting. Remember, this is your first draft; as such the goal should be to finish the book. Once you have completed the first draft, then the editing can begin.
I hope this helps?
