I wrote my first book in 2019, it was a memoir, the book basically captured my life’s story from birth until graduation from University; despite the fact that I had no training whatsoever on book writing, my book still won the best book project award out of hundreds of Submissions for the Online Course that I was enrolled in.
In retrospect, there were few strategies that I had used albeit unknowingly that made my book writing speedy & successful. Here’s the step by step guide that I used and which will get you started in writing your own memoir.
Identify your strong WHY
Determine why you want to write a book about yourself. Is it to document your life experiences, share your wisdom, inspire others, or something else? Clarifying your purpose will guide your writing process. Back then, my purpose for writing my memoir was to meet up with graduation requirements for my Online Course.
Outline your story
My memoir was handwritten before getting it typed but I remember creating a rough draft of everything that had to be in it, then arranging this sequentially to form an outline. In creating your outline, think about the key events, themes, and messages you want to convey. Consider organizing your story chronologically or based on themes that are relevant to your life.
Start with a captivating introduction
Grab your readers’ attention from the beginning or you risk losing them. Write an engaging introduction that sets the tone for your book and introduces your story in a compelling way.
Tell your story honestly
Be open and authentic as you share your life experiences, resist any temptation to exaggerate or misrepresent events. Reflect on your successes, failures, challenges, and lessons learned.
Incorporate personal growth and reflection Share how you’ve evolved and grown throughout your life. Discuss pivotal moments, turning points, and the lessons you’ve learned along the way. My memoir had lessons and action plans at the end of each chapter.
Maintain a consistent writing style
Choose a writing style that aligns with your personality and the core message of your book Whether you prefer a formal tone or a conversational style, consistency is key to creating a flow to your book that engages readers.
Revise and edit: Once you’ve completed your first draft, revise and proofread your work. While I didn’t have access to an editing App such as Grammarly when I wrote my book, my brother acted as my proofreader by reading through the book and eliminating errors.
Beyond the first level editing, I recommend hiring a professional editor to work on your book for clarity, coherence, and grammar.
